Pachamama: ¿Más que Madre Tierra? — Will and Daniela over Andean terraces

Sobremesa · Parte 2 · ~10 min

Hola {{first_name|amigo}},

Halfway through our sobremesa last week, Daniela got up, disappeared, and came back with something to show me. An ofrenda — an offering.

Because on the first of August, across the Andes — Argentina, Bolivia, Perú, Chile — people dig a small hole in the ground and give something back to la Pachamama. Fruit, wine, food. Gracias for the harvest that finished, and a quiet request for the one that's coming.

Here's the part I had wrong. I'd always translated Pachamama as "Mother Earth." Close — but not the whole thing. Pacha carries earth, time and world all at once. Madre Tierra is the shortcut, not the translation.

We also got into caña con ruda — sugarcane liquor infused with rue leaves, drunk en ayunas (on an empty stomach) on August 1st to clear out the bad energy. Daniela grew up watching people drink it every year in Córdoba, long before she knew what it had to do with Pachamama.

And I stole a new favourite word off her: darse un chapuzón — to take a quick dip. The chap is literally the splash. Onomatopoeia you can swim in.

We made you the paper version. Every word from the conversation — ofrenda, cultivos, caña con ruda, chapuzón — with the cultural background behind it and practice so it actually sticks.

Free. No catch, no card.

If you like learning Spanish this way…

Then Legends is built for you. It's the same idea as this episode — culture first, language through story — except it's the myths people across Latin America actually grew up with. El Pombero. La Llorona. El Silbón.

Real Spanish, with the English right beside it when you need it. It's on the App Store now.

One question before you go, and I'd love a real answer: caña, ron, viche — all sugarcane, all different. Does anyone actually know the difference? Daniela and I argued about it and got nowhere. Hit reply.

Nos vemos,
Will & Daniela
